TitleLetters related to Annan's school commissions for the Ministry of Education
Date1949-1962
DescriptionOriginal manila file marked 'Robert Matthew and Johnson-Marshall' containing letters related to Annan's school commissions predominantly for the Ministry of Education. The explanation for the apparent discrepancy between the file title and its contents lies in the fact that Johnson-Marshall had been the Chief Architect for the Ministry of Education between 1948 and 1956. He then went into private partnership with Sir Robert Matthew, creating the firm Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall. Correspondents include members of the pioneering Development Group set up by Johnson-Marshall at the Ministry of Education, including David Medd, Mary Crowley and Maurice Lee. The file includes a letter from the Griffin Brewery enclosing payment for a piece, possibly misfiled by Annan (/1); a letter from Mary Crowley suggesting a meeting to discuss the possibility of commissioning a tiled mural (/2); letters from Maurice Lee related to Annan's tiled mural at Worthing Technical School (/3-5); letters from David Medd related to Annan's hand-painted tiles for Woodside Primary School in Amersham (/7-10; /13-15); an order slip from the Central office of Information to 'Decorate by hand, glaze and refire one hundred and six tiles...as used in toilet and classroom of the Amersham School' for the U.K. Pavilion at the Berlin Industries Fair, 1957 Exhibition (/12); letters from Maurice Lee related to ceramic tiles for a courtyard fountain at Gartree High School, Oadby, Leicestershire (/16-19; 21) and letters from the headmaster of Gartree High School regarding frost damage to the ceramic tiles and their subsequent replacement (/23-24).
NotesMary Crowley and David Medd were pioneering architects who changed the way schools were designed. Medd in particular was passionate about integrating original hand-crafted art into new school buildings and commissioned Annan to create hand-painted tiles for sinks and drinking fountains at Woodside Primary School. Maurice Lee left the Ministry of Education to join Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall.
