TitlePhotographs of 'The History of Flight' for [Hatfield Junior School, Hertfordshire]
DateUndated [c. late 1940s]
DescriptionThree black and white photographs of Annan's dinosaur mural 'The History of Flight' painted for [Hatfield Junior School]. Annan is featured in two of the photographs carrying an oil palette, possibly for the purposes of press photography. One of the photographs is mounted on a large piece of card annotated by [Annan?] 'The History of Flight. One of five panels in a Hertfordshire School. Size 10 feet by 8 feet' (/3).
NotesThe commission may have been part of the ground-breaking schools building programme led by Stirrat Johnson-Marshall, Deputy County Architect with Hertfordshire County Council, who pioneered the production of flexible prefabricated school buildings which could be adapted to suit different needs. Although no formal link can be proven, Johnson-Marshall was the Director of the Camouflage Unit and may have come across Annan's work whilst she was serving in the Camouflage Directorate in Leamington Spa. In 1948 Johnson-Marshall left Hertfordshire to become the Chief Architect of the Ministry of Education. In 1949 he set up a Development Group at the Ministry, inviting David Medd, a former associate from Hertfordshire, to join the group. The Development Group owed much to the Hertfordshire school programme and became an influential centre for innovation in education architecture during the 1950s.
