TitlePhotographs of mosaic panels for King's College Library, Newcastle
Date1959
DescriptionFourteen black and white photographs of three marble mosaic panels entitled 'Space Travel', 'Mining' and 'Architecture'. The works were commissioned by the architects Easton and Robertson for the King's College Library, Newcastle. Each panel features an abstract figure designed to symbolise different aspects of knowledge and learning. The file includes a photograph of Annan's original cartoon for 'Space Travel' (/1); 2 photographs (one mounted) of Anna's original cartoon for 'Mining' (/3-2); various images of Annan working on the panels in her back garden, the height of which necessitated the use of scaffolding (/4-8); and photographs of the finished mosaics (/9-14). 5 photographs are annotated on the reverse by [Annan?] with contextual information about the panels. Three large photographs of the completed panels are mounted on card (two with title labels) each annotated on the reverse with the title, size, medium and location of the panel.
NotesTennant was also commissioned by Easton and Robertson to make a sculpture for the Library. His piece entitled 'Magda' was placed at the foot of the staircase. King's College was originally a college within Durham University, but gained independent status in 1963 to become the University of Newcastle. The panels are still in existence at the University and are one of only three surviving commissions by Annan. The remaining works include the Fleet Building panels (now located at the Barbican Centre, London) and a glass panel in Cayley Primary School, London.
