Title | Negatives of the installation version of 'Western Reversal |
Date | 1974 |
Description | Monochrome negatives of the installation version of 'Western Reversal' installed at 'Project 74', Kunsthalle, Cologne in July 1974. The negatives were originally held in a Tudor processing envelope marked, 'Western Reversal Negs' (in pencil) and 'Installation at Koln' (in ink)’. The first fifteen images relate to the installation version of the work and show Dye's mirror device positioned at different angles to throw projected images of a 1950s Western around the room. The remaining images show stills from a performance in which the projected images overlap in the centre of the screen. Accompanied by a holograph note related to the positioning of sixteen stills from 'Western Reversal', possibly written in relation to a still version of the work. One section of the note includes processing instructions in an unidentified hand. Also includes a medium format negative of a still version of the work in a gallery setting. |
Notes | In Dye’s original version of 'Western Reversal' (1973) a 1950s Western was projected on to a screen via a framework of sixteen moveable mirrors. As the film progressed, Dye moved the mirrors so that the images overlapped in the centre of the screen. For Dye's 'Project 74' installation version, the mirrors were positioned to throw the projected film images around the room. The same roll of film contains images of the 1973 version and 1974 version, suggesting that Dye captured stills of both at same time. A still version of the work was shown at the Lisson Gallery, London in 1975. |
