TitlePhotographs of 'Steps'
Date[1988]
DescriptionTwo unlabelled black and white photographs of the site-specific installation 'Steps' made for The Showroom, London in 1988. The images were originally held in a photographic envelope marked, 'Gallery'. One of the images is annotated on the reverse in black ink with dimensions for resizing. Both photographs feature a photographer’s stamp on the reverse for 'Edward Woodman'. Accompanied by two digital colour copies of the same image printed on to A4 paper. The colour image was used on the cover of the exhibition catalogue for Dye's remaking of the work at the Cleveland Gallery, Middlesbrough in 1992. The images show what appears to be a set of steps leading to an unidentified space. However, the steps are an illusion: ultra violet light, string, paint, mirrors and black cloth create the impression of a solid staircase in a triangular space.
Notes'Steps' was later remade for Dye's solo exhibition of installation and sculpture at The Showroom, London in 1990. It was remade for a third time at the Cleveland Gallery, Middlesbrough in 1992 and then for the fourth time for the joint exhibition 'Out of Darkness' at Tullie House Museums and Art Gallery, Carlisle in September 1995.
