TitlePhotographs of Dye's solo exhibition at the Robert Self Galleries, Newcastle and London, 1976
Datec.1975-1976
DescriptionLarge bundle of black and white photographs of works exhibited at Dye's solo exhibition at the Robert Self Galleries, Newcastle and London in 1976. Includes preparatory materials created during the run-up to the exhibition, including mock-ups of various works. According to Dye's funding application for the exhibition, his works were intended to present his 'filmic' ideas photographically and included both photography and text (see 2016.1/J/1 for the application). The file includes the following:

[/1-3] Images related to 'Throwing Light On' (1976). Includes a photograph of Dye's original drawing of the installation with a typescript label on the reverse. Accompanied by two images of the installation in a gallery setting, the first of which includes holograph annotations on the reverse giving a brief description of the piece. The photograph is also marked with a basic black ink diagram of the work.

[/4-6] A mock-up of 'Target Practice' (c.1976), accompanied by two black and white images of the installation in a gallery setting. The photographs show six identical images – taken from a magazine fashion shoot – overlaid with six different gunsight designs.

[/7-8] Two black and white images of 'The Kiss' (c.1976) in a gallery setting. Includes a brief holograph description of the work on the reverse of /7. The photographs show an enlarged image of a screen kiss with a fragmented copy of the same image placed around the outer edge. A film theory diagram entitled 'Hollywood Occupational Structure' taken from 'Image and Influence: Studies in the Sociology of Film' by Andrew Tudor (Allen and Unwin, 1974) is superimposed over the unfragmented image.

[/9-30] Unlabelled mock-ups and monochrome photographs of 'Mystery Love Story' (c.1976). Includes two images of the installation in a gallery setting. The photographs show a series of images taken from a magazine photo story with a textual narrative by Dye. In some instances, the text is superimposed over the images, in others, the narrative is separate. Some of the mock-up images are annotated with text in black ink.

[/31-33] Black and white images of a [1940s?] cinema audience recoiling in [mock?] horror incorporated into an unidentified work shown at the [Robert Self Gallery, London in September 1976]. The image was also used in publicity material for the exhibition. Accompanied by a contact sheet of images showing the works in exhibition at the London show.

[/34] A black and white image of 'Mystery Love Story', 'Target Practice', 'Throwing Light On' and 'The Kiss' in exhibition at the Robert Self Gallery, Newcastle in May 1976. Annotated on the reverse by Dye with brief information about each work.

[/35-36] Two black and white photographs of diagrams related to the theory of film taken from 'Image and Influence: Studies in the Sociology of Film' by Andrew Tudor (Allen and Unwin, 1974). A third diagram taken from the book - entitled 'Hollywood Occupational Structure' - was used by Dye in 'The Kiss'. The reverse of /36 includes holograph text, possibly used in the exhibition.
