Date | c. 1973-1975 |
Description | Original bundle of photographs of 'Western Reversal' (1973). Includes three black and white stills from a film performance of 'Western Reversal' numbered '1' to '3' on the reverse in blue ink. An interpretative label with a textual description of the work is taped to the reverse of /1. The remaining two images are marked on the reverse in pencil 'David Dye Mirror Film'. Accompanied by the following: a smaller unlabelled photograph of the work mounted on thick red card (/4); an interpretative label used in exhibition (/5); and part of the original packaging for the 1950s film 'Blazing Guns and Bloody Arrows' marked on the reverse in black ink, 'subject matter for a performance piece called Western Reversal. David Dye 1974' (/6). |
Notes | The 1950s Western 'Blazing Guns and Bloody Arrows' was projected via a framework of sixteen movable mirrors. One by one the mirrors were moved so that the sixteen fragmented parts of the whole image overlapped completely in the centre of the screen. An installation of the film performance was made for 'Project 74', Kunsthalle Koln, Cologne, Germany in 1974 and still version of the work was made for Dye's solo exhibition at the Lisson Gallery, London in 1975. |
Related Material | See 2016.1/G/12 for a presentation board of the work; and 2016.1/D/20-21 for additional photographs of 'Western Reversal', including Dye's installation version for 'Project 74'. |
