Notes | Dye made three site-specific versions of the work: the first was made for Dye's solo exhibition at the ICA, London in April 1972; a second version was reshot for the 'The New Art' at the Hayward Gallery, London, August - September 1972; and a final version was made for the Arts Council. The final version formed part of a group of works purchased by Richard Cork on behalf of the Arts Council and was exhibited in their 1973 touring exhibition, 'Beyond Painting and Sculpture'. Two further works – 'Mirror Film' (1971) and 'Two Cameras' (1970) - were also purchased by the Arts Council.
During filming, Dye filmed his left foot walking away from an art institution; he then retraced his footsteps filming his right foot. During exhibition, the films were projected side by side creating the illusion of a pair of feet walking in the same direction.
According to Dye’s interpretative label, the work is dated 1971, but a holograph annotation on the reverse of [/5?] dates the film as 1972. However, a more reasonable date for this version may be 1973, the year in which the Arts Council purchased the site-specific film. As a definite date for the work cannot be ascertained, an approximate date of c.1971-73 has been attributed to the film.
