TitlePhotographs of 'Hand Piece'
Date1972
DescriptionFour black and white photographs of the installation 'Hand Piece' in a gallery setting. Accompanied by a typescript interpretative label mounted on card. The images show two projectors - each behind a screen - facing each other on a table. According to Dye's interpretative text, a hole in each screen allowed a film of Dye's hand moving back and forth to be projected on to the opposite screen. /2 is mounted on card and a holograph label with interpretative text is on the reverse of /3.
NotesAccording to Dye’s interpretative text, 'Hand Piece' was first shown at 'The New Art' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London in 1972. However, an article by Alan Sheridan regarding Dye's early career ('David Dye: Artist/Film-maker', 'Studio International', November/December 1975), suggests that the work was first shown at the ICA, London in April 1972. Labelled negatives related to the ICA show also suggest that the work was shown there first.
