TitleUnidentified and/or unrealised drawings
DateUndated
DescriptionA bundle of unidentified and/or unrealised drawings found in Dye's original portfolios and bought together to form an artificial file. Includes the following:

/1 Three detailed pencil [anatomical?] drawings on paper. Of the drawings, only one is readily identifiable as the breast section of a female body, the other sections are more abstract in their execution. Also includes an isometric pencil drawing of a rectangle and further isometric drawings of various shapes drawn on the verso in pencil.

/2 Unlabelled piece of card with 6 arrow shapes cut out. Graph paper inserts featuring intricate arrow patters in blue, yellow and red ink are stuck on the reverse of the card over each cut out. Two of the inserts have come loose.

/3 Drawing and text on card and plastic entitled 'Forcast'. The drawing features a large expanse of dotted and curved lines in black felt tip that radiate out towards a series of arrows pointing outwards. Text detailing one of Dye's dreams is just legible underneath the drawing. A clear sheet of plastic attached by tape covers the drawing and is marked in black pen 'FORCAST WALK'. A single arrow pointed bottom left is to the left of the title. The drawing is accompanied by a second sheet of card with draft text detailing Dye's dream in black ink, and two rough sketches of the work on notepaper

/4 Pencil and ink sketch on layout paper entitled 'Tarzan and Jane or Tarzana'. The sketches show the figure of a person split into two: one side 'Jane' and the other 'Tarzan'. Includes sketched details of different sections of the figure with labels noting how the figure is to be dressed.

/5 Two pencil and ink sketches of a flying figure in a superhero style pose on paper. Each figure is drawn on a separate grid and annotated in pencil with potential titles. On the verso is an ink outline drawing. Though not readily identifiable, the image bears some relation to the stretched male torso featured in Dye’s anamorphic work 'Idol' and may have been created during Dye's experimentation with mirrors and anamorphism.

/6 Pencil sketches of a potential anamorphic work incorporating a flying superhero figure and a four-sided mirrored pyramid. Includes sparse pencil annotations.

/7 Pencil drawings on paper showing the resulting image when a mirror bisects a drawing of a male torso. The drawings show the reflection symmetry of the torso from the front, side and back view. Also includes various sparsely annotated pencil sketches of a hand clutching a penis, possibly at different stages of arousal, drawn on the verso.

/8 One half of an isometric pencil drawing titled by Dye, 'A mirror thrown into a beam of light in the rain'.

/9 Pencil sketches on two sheets of A3 paper of a figure shackled by 'Oppression', 'Guilt', 'Freedom' and 'Desire'. Heavily annotated by Dye with notes related to the potential work. The images are similar to sketches entitled 'Division of Labour' found in one of Dye's sketchbooks (see 2016.1/A/5). The verso of /2 includes holograph text in a box, possibly taken from/or related to film theory incorporated into his 1976 solo exhibition at the Robert Self Galleries in Newcastle and London.

/10 Unidentifiable pencil sketch on A3 layout paper. Possibly shows a crudely drawn outline of a body set against some steps. The same drawing features on the verso.

/11 An unidentifiable felt-tip linear drawing on triangular shaped paper. The triangle shape suggests that the linear drawing was made during Dye's period of experimentation using anamorphosis and was made to be used in conjunction with a mirrored pyramid.

/12 Pencil diagram of a circle drawn on two large pieces of card taped together. The bottom half of the circle has been marked with a grid, whilst the top left quadrant has been divided into eight segments. The top right quadrant has been left blank. The drawing may represent an early diagram for Dye's 1976 installation 'Throwing Light On'.

[/13] A monochrome painting of male face painted on [acetate?]. The image appears to be a male face [at the point of ejaculation?], possibly copied from a pornographic magazine. Part of the [acetate] has been cut away from around the face, eyes and mouth.
