TitleSketches and calculations for a remaking of 'Distancing Device'
Datec. 2000
DescriptionSketches and calculations for a remaking of 'Distancing Device' made for 'Live in Your Head: concept and experiment in Britain 1965-75' at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 2000. Includes a photocopied image of Dye's original 'Distancing Device' annotated with measurements for the position of each 'hood' [/1]; a pencil drawing of the device on tracing paper, bisected at various intervals by ink lines [/2]; a rough sketch of the device with 'hoods' sketched in red ink with annotated measurements [/3]; and two sheets of calculations in ink and pencil originally joined together by tape showing the angle, dimension, width and distance from the floor of each letter in 'KEEP GOING' [/4-5].
NotesAccording to Dye's Doctoral thesis, The Whitechapel Gallery offered to remake Dye's 'Distancing Device' as the original had been destroyed during the 1980s. The later version made in 2000 looked identical to the original and was later included in the exhibition 'St Martin’s Sculpture Department: An Alternative History', Tate Britain, London, 2007 and 'United Enemies: The Problem of Sculpture in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s', Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, 2012.
