Title | Sketches and notes for 'Steps' |
Date | 1988; 1995 |
Description | Small bundle of loose sketches and notes in pencil and ink for Dye's installation 'Steps' at The Showroom, London in 1988 and a remaking of the installation for the 'Out of Darkness' exhibition, Tullie House Museums and Art Gallery, Carlisle in 1995. The papers represent material found together in the collection, but not retained by Dye in an original file. The first seven items in the bundle relate to Dye's 1988 installation of 'Steps' at The Showroom and includes the following: sketches marked with dimensions; notes and 'to-do' lists for installing the work; and a gallery plan with a sketched side elevation drawn on the verso [/1-6]. Also includes a sketch in blue ink marked 'Wiring for Timer', though it is not known whether the sketch relates to 'Steps' or another of Dye's works [/7]. The remaining material relates to a remaking of the work for the 1995 group exhibition 'Out of Darkness' at Tullie House Museums and Art Gallery and includes an A3 photocopied plan of the gallery space at Tullie House with annotations in an unknown hand and highlighter marks denoting the exhibition space; two detailed diagrams showing the areas of wall to be painted black for 'Steps', possibly sent to Tullie House in preparation for the installation; and an untitled diagram showing the positioning [of the string] for 'Steps' [/8-11]. |
Notes | 'Steps' was originally made for The Showroom in 1988. It was later remade for Dye's solo exhibition of installation and sculpture at The Showroom, London in 1990. It was remade for a third time at the Cleveland Gallery, Middlesbrough in 1992 and then for the fourth time for the joint exhibition 'Out of Darkness', Tullie House Museums and Art Gallery, Carlisle, September 1995. The work features ultra violet light, string, paint, mirrors and black cloth to create the illusion of a solid staircase in a triangular space. |
