TitleLoose sketches and notes, c.1985-1990
Datec.1985-1990
DescriptionLarge bundle of loose sketches and notes in pencil, paint and ink. The papers represent material found together, but not retained by Dye in an original file. The majority of material is untitled and undated, though it appears to relate to the period between 1985 and 1990, with a large proportion of material related to Dye's MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths' College, London and his participation in the joint exhibition 'Under the Sign of Saturn' at the Nigel Greenwood Gallery, London in August 1987. A significant proportion of the material includes sketches for works incorporating heraldic imagery and motifs, including armour, shields, weaponry, coats of arms and armorial animals. Identified material includes sketches and notes for works exhibited as part of Dye's MA, including 'Tattoo' (1986) [/1-6], 'Tight Reign' (1986) [/7-12] and 'Build' (1986) [/13-14]; and rough sketches for 'Line of Least Resistance' (1987) shown at the joint exhibition 'Under the Sign of Saturn'. [/47-51]. Includes cut-outs and sketches drawn on tracing paper, graph paper, layout paper, computer print-out paper and on the reverse of MA course material. Also includes an outsize sketch executed in [white pastel?] on black paper of a leather jacket hanging on a hanger. A similar image was shown at an unidentified exhibition alongside 'Corpus' (1986) and 'Line of Least Resistance' (1987).
Notes'Tight Reign' and 'Build' were identified using David Dye's website (http://daviddye.co.uk/). According to the exhibition catalogue for 'Under the Sign of Saturn', Dye exhibited 'near-heraldic' devices, suggesting that some of the material represents preparatory work for the exhibition.
