Title | Green sketchbook |
Date | c.1968-1969 |
Description | Dark green sketchbook containing a small volume of pencil and ink notes, text, sketches and drawings related to Dye's [first year?] at Saint Martin’s School of Art. The sketchbook is inscribed by Dye on the inside front cover with his name and London address. The opening page features two handwritten epigraphs on the nature of art taken from quotes by Anthony Caro and Philip King. Little of the material is titled, apart from a detailed set of notes on a work entitled 'Wet Dreamer' in which he analyses, critiques and defends his 'project'. Most of the sketches and drawings are abstract in nature. Includes a detailed drawing for a sculpture of interlocking shapes which Dye made and photographed whilst at Saint Martin's School of Art. The sketchbook also includes a series of pencil instructions for turning the pages of a book. The instructions appear over the course of several pages and demand the viewer/reader to turn the pages in a particular way. Much of the sketchbook is empty. |
Notes | The Henry Moore Institute Archive holds a separate accession of notebooks used during his attendance at Saint Martin's School of Art. The identical notebooks – numbering seven in total - are dated from February 1969 to May 1971. Each contains detailed drawings, notes and self-criticism. Dye appears to have started these notebooks sometime into his degree and continued using them until May 1971. This sketchbook does not form part of this distinct series and its contents suggests that it was started by Dye at the beginning of his degree.
Similar instructions on turning the pages of a book were incorporated into the exhibition catalogue for 'el arte como idea en inglaterre' (Art as Idea from England), CAYC, Buenos Aires, Argentina, May 1971 and the 'Studio International' magazine-catalogue for 'The British Avant Garde', New York Cultural, New York, May – August 1971.
