DescriptionHardback sketchbook titled 'KS Devon. Lt Summer 68.' including on-site landscape studies, figurative, caricature, Christian iconography, written notes and iconographical interpretation. An obscured self-portrait drawing noted as 'Everyone wants to be a painter' on reverse of tipped in landscape study. Keir Smith references the work of Paul Klee ('Nocturnal Festival', (1921)) and comments on the similarity of a local landscape, 'Coldrum Stones', to that in Paul Nash's work, 'Event on the Downs' (1934).
NotesInformation from Clare Rowe: This was pivotal period for Keir Smith as he decided to be an artist rather than an archaeologist. Influences include John Armstrong (1893-1973), Roger Hilton (1911 - 1975), Paul Klee (1879 - 1940), Paul Nash (1889 - 1946) and Mark Tobey (1890 - 1976).
