DescriptionHardback black sketchbook dating from undergraduate course at University of Newcastle Upon Tyne containing sketches, collages, notes and designs towards freestanding constructions, three-dimensional canvases, multi-panel paintings, canvas folding techniques and various self-analytical notes/poems/titles. Imagery including abstractions, figure used for scale, Egyptian architecture and sculpture, a Keir Smith hand outline, landscapes and architectural images. Includes references to "Icarus", 'The Scream', Edvard Munch, (1893) and J.M.W. Turner. Also includes two extensive passages of text - "The explorer..." [By Keir Smith?]. Recurring influence by the Egyptian temple, "Karnak". Other by Keir Smith references include: the "Cloudracer Series"; potential titles and placements; "Corner piece (Sideways Creep)" and "Low Level".
NotesInformation from Clare Rowe: 'Veils of Honour' by Keir Smith of sculpture and studies, regarding double page wash. Ian Stephenson was Keir Smith's personal tutor. Shaped-canvas influences include Frank Stella (1936), Jules Olitski (1922 - 2007), Kenneth Noland (1924 - 2010), Sean Scully (1945) and Barnett Newman (1905-1970). Pop-art influences include Richard Hamilton (1922-2011) and Patrick Caulfield (1936 - 2005).
