Notes | Long working hours, food rationing and interruptions in gas and electricity supplies had seen cooking in the home dwindle during the Second World War. British Restaurants were set up to counter this problem. They were large government-operated canteens designed to provide cheap but nourishing meals to the British public during the war. Often housed in drab Drill Halls or schools, there was a deliberate policy to boost moral by decorating British Restaurants with art and painted murals. The British Restaurant at Leamington Spa had six panels by separate artists, all of whom were members of the regional branch of the Artists' International Association. The subjects of the panels at Leamington Spa were meant to be a celebration of civilian life during wartime. |
