Title | Photographs of 'Mirror Portrait for Camera' |
Date | [1981] |
Description | Eight unlabelled black and white photographs in varying sizes of the anamorphic mirror sculpture 'Mirror Portrait for Camera' (1981). The images show various components of the work, including mirrored floor tiles painted with four sections of a linear self-portrait; a mirrored pyramid sitting at the centre of the tiles; and a camera mounted on a tripod capturing the corrected image reflected in the pyramid below. Includes photographs of Dye's anamorphic self-portrait captured by the camera. A square shape has been cut away from a section of /6, though it is unclear why. Also includes a presentation board featuring copies of /1 and /8 mounted on card with a typescript label on the reverse [/9]. |
Notes | An anamorphic image only reveals itself when viewed from a particular perspective or when viewed through a transforming optical device, such as a mirror. In this instance, the mirrored pyramid acts as the optical device enabling Dye's self-portrait to be viewed. The work relates to a period of anamorphic experimentation by Dye. According to Dye's notes, he made a later version of ‘Mirror Portrait for Camera’ in 1982 entitled 'Mirror Portrait'. Unlike his original photographic work, the anamorphic image in 'Mirror Portrait' was only visible in a suspended mirror when viewing the work from the doorway. |
