Description | Large bundle of loose sketches and notes in pencil and ink. The papers represent material found together in the collection, but not retained by Dye in an original file. Much of the material is untitled and undated, though it appears to relate to the period from the making of 'Pump' in 1988 for 'The Invisible Man' at Goldsmiths Gallery, London in 1988 and his one man show of installation and sculpture at The Showroom, London in 1990. Much of the material represents an exploration of ideas incorporating mirrors, with some concepts evolving into realised works exhibited at The Showroom, including: 'Pump' (1988) [/1-17], 'Equation' (c.1989-90) [/24-33], 'Core' (c.1989-90) [/41-42], 'Lifeline' (1990) [/43-47; 50]; and 'My Bed' (1990) [/48-54]. Also includes sketched plans of The Showroom gallery space with the position of each work noted on the plan [/55-57]. The majority of remaining sketches are similar in style to those realised for exhibition, but represent either early incarnations of realised works, or ideas not developed further by Dye. Also includes the following: a bundle of notes by Dye, including detailed 'to-do' lists compiled by Dye in the run up to the exhibition; a draft letter proposing that ['Steps'?] could be shown at the Gateshead Garden Festival; and draft text on mirrors and anamorphosis. |
