TitleSmall black sketchbook
DateJan 1978-Oct 1979
DescriptionSmall black sketchbook inscribed on the inside front cover, 'started 26th January 1978'. Contains pencil and ink sketches, diagrams and notes towards various works, some unrealised, including a remaking of 'Target Practice' (c.1976), 'Five Frames of Fujichrome', 'Two Way Mirror' and 'Frame of Reference'. Also includes notes on the film 'Wavelength' and the use of montage by filmmakers; sketches of film paraphernalia - projectors, reels, etc. - reimagined as every objects; and sketches of a shop window overlaid with a smash effect. The sketchbook contains some analytical commentary by Dye in which he interrogates his ideas and questions his filmmaking. In a note dated 14th October 1979, Dye writes, 'No More film. I must make objects…I am fed up with nothing to show people – Only good on paper – it’s about time I became good in reality. Mirrors will be my starting point…A decision at last. I am no technician – and I am no director – I am an individual artist'. Also includes 'to-do' lists, personal income costings, reminders and contacts. Accompanied by a loose sheet of notes for 'Five Frames of Fujichrome' removed from the sketchbook; a sheet of annotated ink sketches of projectors and film reels reimagined as every-day objects such as coat hangers, lamps and tables; and a sheet of sketches of pyramids, fans and projectors torn from the sketchbook.
