TitlePersonal photographs and slides
Date1960s-1970s
DescriptionPersonal photographs, negatives and slides held by Cripps. Much of the material includes images of friends, family, holidays, buildings and landscapes. Includes the following:

[/1] Colour slides of [family holidays?] in Jersey, Guernsey, Norway, America and Canada, mostly from the 1960s. Includes images of landscapes, buildings, gardens, cruise ships and aeroplanes. Some of the slides appear to be stock images bought as a souvenir. Also includes images of [elderly family members?] in a domestic setting. Cripps does not appear in any of the photographs. Some numbered in ink.

[/2] Black and white medium format negatives printed onto photographic paper showing scenic images of a beach, lakes, hills, a bridge, a war memorial, a partially collapsed jetty and an unidentified garden and house. A woman and a dog are shown in the garden; and a young boy [possibly Cripps] is shown sitting on the beach. The images also show later images of [Cripps] photographing himself in a mirror and a [pile of detritus in a makeshift tent?]. The images are marked, ‘Corsham. Diddy Bag’ in an unknown hand and appear to be prints made by the Stephen Cripps Trust.

[/3] Black and white negatives of a young woman standing in the countryside labelled by Cripps, ‘Anita’. Includes five frames of Cripps in a similar landscape and four frames of a train station platform. Accompanied by two sets of corresponding contact sheets marked in gold ink, ‘Anita Diddy Bag’. The contact sheets appear to be later prints made by the Stephen Cripps Trust.

[/4] Black and white photographs of Cripps and friends at a party originally held in a manila envelope marked in an unknown hand, ‘Claux's 21st 70 Ladbrooke Rd Party – Portraits’. The envelope includes additional annotations, all in unidentified hands. Includes one enlarged photograph of Cripps [play fighting?] with another partygoer.

[/5] Black and white negatives of Claudia Kinmonth and another unidentified female in a garden. Also includes images of a burnt hand, a market stall and an unidentified male asleep on a sofa. Accompanied by a contact sheet of corresponding images marked on the reverse in ink by [Cripps?], ‘burnt hand May 24th 1980, performance around then, Claux's Birthday party'.

[/6] Two black and white photographs of an unidentified [artist?] wearing overalls standing next to a blank canvas on the wall. A tin of paint and a decorator’s brush are on the floor. Accompanied by a colour photograph of an unidentified man standing next to an open air kiln.

[/7] Colour negatives and corresponding colour prints of a seagull and the interior of a [hotel] room originally held in a processing wallet marked in pencil, ‘Canada, colour’. Accompanied by a black and white contact sheet of the negatives annotated in gold ink, ‘Canada colour negs. F’. The contact sheets appear to be later prints made by the Stephen Cripps Trust.

[/8] Black and white photographs of a military memorabilia on display in an unidentified room originally held in a yellow [1960s?] Kodak processing envelope. Includes photographs of uniforms, shells, rifles, guns and medals displayed on white sheets. None of the items have labels, suggesting they were part of a private collection, possibly Cripps’ own boyhood collection of militaria ['Stephen Cripps: Pyrotechnic Sculptor, A Monograph', ACME in association with The Stephens Cripps Trust, (1992) p.15]. Accompanied by a strip of black and white 40mm negatives in a 3-frame strip. The three images show guns on display in the same venue.
