DescriptionHardback black sketchbook dating from undergraduate course at University of Newcastle Upon Tyne containing sketches, collages, notes and designs towards 'Spill trough' paintings, constructing three-dimensional canvases, multi-panel canvases, freestanding paintings; painting application techniques, processes and tools; potential titles/poems [?], sewn canvas strips, triangular paintings and screenprinting. Imagery including abstraction, classical architecture, industrial architecture, landscapes, volcano motif, pyramid motif. Includes references to "Claude Monet" by William Seitz and Joseph Haydn Symphonies. Also working towards large scale constructions with dimensions. Other references found in the sketchbook include the following: 'Spill patterns/channels/device'; 'collaged pour troughs'; 'volcano + lighting, flood'; 'pentimenti' [changes in surface], 'Newcastle Blue - in all its pristine glory'; 'Leaving blue'; the differences between Expressionist and Impressionist styles; 'Proper free standing sculpture'; 'paint squeezed between to panels when clamping' and 'Slipway Landing'. Keir Smith references locations including 'High Level' and 'Road Bridge' [bridges in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne] and 'Musee Marmottan, Paris' [see Notes regarding this reference].
NotesInformation from Clare Rowe: Keir Smith received a bursary to travel to Paris to study Claude Monet's paintings, 'Water Lilies' (c. 1920). Shaped-canvas influences include Frank Stella (1936), Jules Olitski (1922 - 2007), Kenneth Noland (1924 - 2010), Sean Scully (1945) and Barnett Newman (1905-1970). Pop-art influences include Richard Hamilton (1922-2011) and Patrick Caulfield (1936 - 2005).
