TitlePhotographs of 'The Good Earth' for Rugby Road Junior School, Leamington Spa
Date1944
DescriptionEighteen black and white photographs of Annan's mural 'The Good Earth' painted for Rugby Road Junior School, Leamington Spa. The oil on brick mural incorporates images of coal mining, bricklaying, pottery making and fruit picking. A number of photographs are annotated 'Leamington Spa Junior School' on the front in blue ink by and unidentified hand. The first six photographs in the file are annotated on the reverse in both pencil and ink with details about the mural, including its title, location and scene depicted. According to the annotations, the design is by Annan, but the work was undertaken by the Leamington Artists and Designers Group. The annotations are in more than one hand, possibly Annan's and Tennant's, or other members of the design group.
NotesThe Artists and Designers Group (Leamington) was established by members of the Artists' International Association (AIA). Out of all its regional groups, Leamington was one of the largest and most prolific collectives of the day, largely due to the fact that Leamington was the home of the Camouflage Directorate to which a large number of artists were deployed during the war. Both Annan and Tennant were active members of the group, with Annan undertaking a number of murals as part of the collective.
