TitleLife drawings
Datec.1932-1970s
DescriptionThese comprise a series of life drawings made at the Slade School of Fine Art, [1-48] during the period c.1932-1936, which include portrait studies [1-6], two of which have a possible likeness to Kenneth Armitage [1-2]; a study after antique sculpture [7]; figures in movement [40-48] and drawings of a black male holding a staff [37 & 39]. Most have drawings on both sides of the paper and are mainly in pencil with some in ink or ink with wash. Some are signed 'Joan A. M. Moore'.

Of the remaining life drawings [49-112] made after the Slade, only a few are dated between 1960-1961, although it is likely they cover a wider period. These are on paper, tracing paper, board and paper mounted on board in pencil, black crayon, charcoal and black pen and red watercolour on brown paper [94-96]. Many are signed with Joan Moore's monogram. They mainly depict standard life subjects but there are several drawings which are outside this category, including a drawing that shows a group of men life drawing, with the inscription 'Paris', c.1936 [49]; another showing a group of women life drawing [50]; a life drawing of a male figure with a later addition of a female painter who is drawn to look as if she is working on the male figure with a brush and palette [51]; life drawings of a woman with a young boy [97-100 & 103-104].
Arrangement1-48 were grouped in a package together with the label 'Slade'.
NotesThe complete series of Slade life drawings were retained but a representative sample of the rest of the life drawings was made by VW and Penelope Curtis, April 2007, and the remainder were returned to the Estate.
